It's officially July and we are now somewhere around a third of the way through Summer. I know it doesn't much feel like it, what with a three week long monsoon raining down upon us at the beginning of the season. Summer has a long list of perks here in Oklahoma. From our vast system of lakes and rivers and other swimming holes, to music festivals like Rocklahoma and Center of the Universe Festival, there's no shortage of fun activities to be had, if only one knows where to look. So where does one look for a good snow cone? That's where I come in! Follow this series to find out the who's who of Tulsa snow cones. Over the next few weeks I'll be visiting every snow cone stand I can find to figure out just who the best is!
***Skip to the bottom for a brief summary and the nitty gritty details***
I didn't set out for a snow cone today, I was simply on my way to the bank when I stumbled upon this little mobile unit and decided to stop by and check it out. The first problem was simply finding somewhere to park. I had to park a good fifteen yards from the stand itself. That's not much a walk for me, but for anyone older, handicapped, or simply not a fan of 100 degree parking lots, it's a bit rough. SFC would be wise to find a better parking lot for their stand in future seasons.
As far as atmosphere goes, SFC is a no-go. There's one table, right next to the road, with no music and no entertainment. The grounds, however, are very clean. There was no trash lying about, the table was clean and non-sticky. The inside of the shack appeared to be very clean and orderly. There was only one worker present at the time, and she was very friendly and outgoing.
Upon employee' recommendation, I purchased the titular "SFC." My girlfriend had the "Summer Lovin." Morgan wasn't a fan of the Summer Lovin', but solely because it was more sour than she expected. The SFC was one of the best snow cones I have ever had. The ice was very fine and soft, though I have had softer. I'm personally not a fan of the softest snow cones out there; the ones that feel like actual snow. I like soft ice, not snow. To each their own, though. There are softer snow cones out there, but this one was definitely gourmet. The amount of syrup was perfect, the flavors were fantastic, the presentation was elegant. The worker thoroughly wiped down the cups before giving them to us, careful not to leave a drop of syrup on the sides.
The prices were a little higher than I like, but I understand that the overhead of a stand in Tulsa Hills is probably higher than many other snow cone stands have to deal with.
In summary; While lacking in certain entertainment and atmospheric aspects, Sam Frances Co. offers a decadent snow cone that satisfies the taste buds and the eyes, and isn't too hard on the wallet. I award it four stars.
